Multi-Sensory Approaches to Learning

On our first day back after a rather wet winters break Birtenshaw staff welcomed Richard Hirstwood into the school for an exciting take on Multi-Sensory Approaches to Learning looking to explore a creative curriculum which will continually engage, challenge and provide enjoyment for all our young people.

During the session we delved into the use of affordable alternatives and innovative materials, it was great to see how we could adapt simple ideas to provide unique and tailor made experiences for each of the pupils from relatively inexpensive materials. One which we found particularly interesting was the use of umbrella’s to create personalised sensory spaces.

It was great for staff to see how they could use the manipulation of light to create sensory stories – some of the ideas talked about today I would love to recreate in our classes’

Hirstwood Training truly demonstrates a genuine love for everything sensory and we are excited to put their ideas into actions (and create some new ones of our own).
