Finalist Nomination – 2018 Autism Professionals Award for Inspirational Education Provision – Higher and Further Education
Birtenshaw College was established in 2014 in response to the lack of local further education opportunities for young adults with special educational needs and disability. Personalised learning is at the heart of the College Curriculum and focuses on the Preparing for Adulthood outcomes and desired long term aspirations as identified in learners’ Education and Health Care plans. The College has high expectations and believes that all learners should have a voice and make choices about their future. The College has created its own smallholding farm and community café to develop employability skills for its learners. As a relatively new provision, its strong reputation within the community has resulted in Birtenshaw College being the first choice post-16 provision for many families.
Other finalists are Coleg Elidyr Education and Care Team and Student Wellbeing Team, The University of Lincoln (WOW Summer School)
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Wednesday 7 March 2018 in Harrogate.
