Classic Car Maintenance
Harry*, a young person at one of Birtenshaw’s children’s homes, recently completed a 10-week course in classic car maintenance at Bolton College.
Supported by Birtenshaw staff, Harry learned lots about classic car restoration and maintenance through weekly workshops, allowing him to get hands-on with some fantastic cars.
Harry also made a panel for a car. He measured the parts, bent it on a specialist machine and spot welded it together, before sanding and spray painting.
Harry really applied himself and has had a great time learning new and transferable skills. The staff member who supported him said:
“He did really well. He listened well, interacted well with the tutor and seemed to really enjoy it.”
Harry has said he now wants to build on his skills and not only do the next classic car maintenance course but also attend a brick laying course.
Positive activities like this are an important part of life at Birtenshaw’s children’s homes and help provide valuable experiences in preparation for greater independence and future employment.
