National Camping and Caravanning Winners 2016
On 16 May 2016 Birtenshaw School was declared the winner of the 2016 National ‘Camping and Caravanning Week – Get kids Outdoors Challenge!’ The event aims to encourage children and young people to work together and spend quality time outdoors. All the young people who took part thoroughly enjoyed the camping activities so it was fantastic to have actually won the challenge as well. Not only did the school win a brand new tent and camping equipment but four pupils were able to take part in a camping adventure at Twycross Zoo on 30 May 2016.
We left the school bright and early on Monday morning eager to start the journey. Making our way down the M6 to the zoo everyone was very excited singing along to the radio and talking about what to expect.
Before the adventure began we settled down for a picnic, planning our route around the zoo and having a go at crazy golf. For the rest of the afternoon we took our time wandering around the zoo, with the challenge of who could take the best selfie with an animal, it was an absolutely fantastic day.
As we made our way to the Conkers Camping and Caravan site we were taken by surprise as the National Camping and Caravanning Organisation showed us where we would be sleeping…in Teepees! The young people couldn’t wait to get inside them and make themselves at home.
The whole day had been such an incredible experience we all thought things couldn’t get any better as we played in the fields, but then the BBQ arrived! Everyone was so happy and relaxed as we ate our food and watched the sun set, looking back at what a great time we all had and the new friendships we had made.
We are now looking forward to planning many more camping trips across the summer.
Well done to all the young people who took part and a big thank you to the National Camping and Caravanning Organisation for being so accommodating!
