The End of an Era – Richard Sutherland former Chair of the Birtenshaw Group has died!

It is with regret that The Birtenshaw Group, wish to inform you that our former Chair, Richard Sutherland MBE, died peacefully in hospital on 27 April 2021. Richard had been involved for a number of years with Birtenshaw, before being appointed Chair in 2006 until he stepped down in 2012.

Richard worked tirelessly to improve the fortunes of Birtenshaw and the young people we support. He was always very supportive and was fully involved in securing our first major investment leading to the construction of the new state of the art, school and headquarters in Bromley Cross, Bolton in 2012. His work complete Richard resigned from his role as Chair, at the end of 2012.

As a mark of our gratitude to Richard, the new school hall was named the ‘Richard Sutherland Hall’ (there is a plaque outside each of the hall doors) during the official opening ceremony in October 2012 and of course Richard was recognised in the national honours with the award of an MBE for his services to disabled children.

The Birtenshaw Group wish to express our sympathy to Richard’s family circle for their loss.

‘Richard Sutherland MBE gone, but never forgotten by Birtenshaw.’
